the smallest gallery you'll ever get lost in ...

Turn Back Time -  Simple on the outside, spectacular on the inside!  Prairie Star Gallery is filled with centuries-old art forms displayed in a beautiful century-old building.  It's located in the heart of downtown Sioux Falls, on Phillips Ave. It's a gorgeous place, with one-of-a-kind original art displayed in a relaxing ambiance.  You'll agree with the 10,000 customers who preceded you --  the gallery and its art are fabulous!

The exceptional variety and originality of our art distinguishes Prairie Star Gallery from others. Nearly all art is from the U.S.; a small percentage is created by Canadian Iroquois.  It is Indigenous handmade, authentic, and high quality.  The  750 artists we have represented are predominately from Northern Plains tribes. But please resist the impulse to equate 'Northern Plains' to 'Sioux'.

It's true the term Sioux is rich with history, but it's imprecise like 'European'.  Instead think Oglala, Rosebud, Cheyenne River, or Yanktoni.  The artists' tribal traditions influence their art and the stories they tell through their sculpture, paintings, bead and quill work, drums - everything.  We also represent Navajo, Santo Domingo, Blackfeet, Ojibwa (Chippewa, Anishinaabe), Assiniboine, Three Affiliated Tribes of Ft. Berthold, and many others.  Each is unique and identifiable.

No matter the artists' tribe or band, you'll find our art is incomparable.  We've been told by people who have visited galleries all over the U.S. that ours is the finest gallery of Indigenous art, supported by the most-knowledgeable and helpful staff.

Preserve the Past -  "The past is never dead.  It's not even past."  - Faulkner
Stop in, and put the world on pause.  Experience a time inconceivable by today's standards: 125 years ago the telephone had just been invented; automobiles still were on the horizon; and, television and cell phones weren't even science fiction.  Hard to believe?  Not for our artists.

Our art originates from a time long before the railroad and telegraph, when everything was handcrafted and everyone was an artisan to some extent.  If you are someone who realizes those days are gone, and that art such as ours is rare and becoming even more so, you owe it to yourself to visit us and appreciate truly remarkable art.

Promote Timeless Art -   We work hard to purchase and promote only the highest-quality Indigenous art from artists we know.  But ultimately only you can enable our artists to continue the traditions of their ancestors, through purchase of their art.  We appreciate your patronage and 12 years of continuous support of their artistic and historical endeavors.

You who support the gallery come from all 50 states and over 50 countries.        Our success depends on our artists' talent and originality, and your trust and confidence.  A major factor in your loyalty may be the consistent quality of our unique and authentic art.  Another may be the information we provide about the artists, their art, and the cultures we represent.  Whatever the reasons, we truly have enjoyed serving your artistic interests for over a decade.

3/50 Project

Prairie Star Gallery is a member of the 3/50 Project , a grass-roots effort with a mission to save the brick-and-mortar stores our nation's consumers depend on.  The concept is to encourage as many folks as possible to invest $50 a month in any combination of 1, 2, or 3 store-front stores in their hometown or in the town they happen to be visiting. (http://www.the350project.net/home.html)

Why is this important?  Because unlike some large businesses, most local stores don't receive subsidies from any governmental body - be it local, state, or federal.  It's only through your purchase of our goods that we recycle those $$ to pay our staff modest salaries, pay the landlord, the web host, the utility companies, the airport case, the ... well, you understand.  We run our store the same way proprietors ran the general stores, barber shops, and millinery stores here in Sioux Falls and across this great nation 100 years ago.  Without customers they and we cannot survive.

We don't have the luxury of making dumb decisions based on unmitigated self-interest.  We survive by consistently providing you the best goods and services available.  This talent allows us to make a salary a tiny fraction of the greedy guys who are getting federal bailout dollars.  We're not looking for your sympathy - we chose to do this.  We are, however, looking for as many of you as possible to support our artists and us, so we can continue to bring you one-of-a-kind authentic original Indigenous art, just as we have for the past 12 years.
